PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Parents can play many roles in sports: current or former athlete, coach, fan, motivator, role model or critic. A few studies have shown that family members may influence an athlete’s involvement and achievement in sport more than coaches. Parents also are the first and most critical agents for socializing sports. Santa Cruz County Lacrosse welcomes parent involvement from coaching to volunteering with Association activities and tasks. We also support positive support from the sidelines towards all of the players.

Purchasing Your First Stick

Buying the right stick for a beginner is important, having the right pocket can make the difference in the accuracy of throws.  There are a wide variety of sticks available and can range from $30-$500+.

At first, it can be overwhelming to pick the right stick.  You want your child to have a good first experience.  We do too! Below is a list of what we firsthand experienced and could be a good fit for your child:

Boys:

Maverick Charger Starter Stick - $50.  A good solid stick for the beginner, the pocket can be broken in with a little effort.  Play-It-Again has inventory of this stick, let them know we sent you.  They also have sponsored our league and as our sport grows in the community so will their selection of Lacrosse gear.

String King Complete II - $99.  Arguably the best starter stick for a beginner.  Light weight, established pocket.  Well worth the upgrade.

Girls:

Warrior Brine Warp Jr. -$49-69.    Many of the online retailers sell these sticks.  You might also be able to pick it up from Dick's sporting goods.

String King Starter Jr. & Complete Jr. - $69. Rated best value stick for women's lacrosse.

Purchasing Equipment

The equipment needed to play lacrosse can get expensive and varies for boys and girls. SCCLA has worked with some vendors to help lower the cost of equipment.  For the 2024 season, we have been able to secure starter gear (excluding a stick , cleats, cup and mouthguard) for the first 30 new boy  players.

Girl's Equipment:  Women's lacrosse stick, protective eye goggles, mouthguard.

Boy's Equipment: Men's lacrosse stick, helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, mouthguard. Important: The rules  require that shoulder pads meet a new safety standard. Make sure that the shoulder pads you purchase meet the NOCSAE certification.

If you decide to purchase your own gear, we find that the best place to look is online:
